5/29/2023 0 Comments Phantom kay novel![]() I think the general landscape of literary criticism among Phantom story fans has changed since then, but it's still a favorite for a lot of folks! Way back when I first posted this review in 2008, the internet was all over me about the grade, ranging from "how dare you, this is Literary Art" to "did you not READ it, it is so flawed". Many followers of this particular literary niche consider Kay's novel so definitive and admirable in quality that they put it on a pedestal of equal authority to Leroux's original. Kay wasn't the first to write derivative fiction based on Leroux's work, but she was the first to do so with a wide enough audience and publishing reach to really become a household name for fans of the novel (and of Lloyd Webber's musical), and her book remains one of the "big" works in the Phantom canon, with tons of later influence and many derivative works based in turn on it. So here we finally are, with the grandmother of all Phantom prequels, sequels, and fiction that came after. ![]()

Making the best of it, the 11 friends who aren't hung over depart their Myanmar resort on Christmas morning to boat across a misty lake-and vanish. Violently murdered days before takeoff, she's reduced to watching her friends bumble through their travels from the remove of the spirit world. For one, it goes against Jasmine's plan, and the last thing Ashton needs is a fling with a costar that'll make his complicated personal life into tabloid fodder he needs to focus on breaking out in Hollywood instead. ![]() Playing bitter exes forced to work together, Jasmine and Ashton unwittingly get as close to each other as their characters do, much to their chagrin. ![]() And she thinks her plan will be easy to pull off - until she meets her co-star, telenovela legend Ashton Suarez, who'll play her ex-husband Victor. After all, Jasmine doesn't need to settle down just because her family thinks it's the key to happiness. We first meet soap opera star Jasmine Lin Rodriguez as she's trying to move on from a public breakup, and after landing a lead role on a bilingual telenovela called Carmen in Charge, she comes up with what she calls a Leading Lady plan - because "Leading Ladies are badass queens making jefa moves." That means focusing on herself, making her family (especially her abuela) proud of her - and swearing off men. This book fizzes with sex, betrayal, lies, and family drama - but the good news is, it comes without an actual telenovela's requisite cliffhangers and tragedies. Alexis Daria's You Had Me at Hola had me at Latinx representation, sexy soapy plot, and a meta-telenovela addicting enough to actually get picked up by Netflix IRL. ![]() 5/29/2023 0 Comments Mcraven book make your bed![]() ![]() Admiral McRaven’s original speech went viral with over 10 million views. ![]() Taking inspiration from the university’s slogan, “What starts here changes the world,” he shared the ten principles he learned during Navy Seal training that helped him overcome challenges not only in his training and long Naval career, but also throughout his life and he explained how anyone can use these basic lessons to change themselves-and the world-for the better.
